Hallas Album 3

This is a large album, in the style of an old family Bible, with a heavy black leather cover. The spine is very damaged now, stuck with thick tape many years ago, but the photos of our family in (largely) Victorian times, and some early 1900s, are all in great condition. It seems to mainly feature Puss’s ancestors: the Jones, Eastwoods, Hastings, and their connections, eg Zieglers.

These images are from Puss’s old Bible style family album featuring her Victorian friends and family.

In the slides, all the caption details for the images in this album were transcribed by Helen from Puss’s handwritten notes – notes that Alex Hill had requested that Puss make, many years ago. The notes were written on loose pieces of paper that were slotted through the album at the time, and remain there today (2024). As long as someone doesn’t open the album on a windy day, or drop the album on the floor, hopefully those slips of paper in Puss’s writing will stay there for many decades more.

The computer sorted the images into name order, so that is the order they appear below – rather than in the order that they appear in the album – sorry about that!

Below are the photos that wouldn’t upload to the PowerPoint file, so they’re not in the video of the album

This one below is captioned: “Aunt Amy Quilliam third from right Aunt Millie sister Uncles James Pickering Jones behind bearded gentleman 1895”.

Below: “Family group in Ramsey I of Man Ernest, Arthur, wife Effie with Charles, May and friend Tom, Hastings and friend”.

Below: “Jennie Welsh elder sister of Minnie and married to William Hastings Eastwood eldest son of William Eastwood Sr Mary Jones only daughter of Tom and May”.

Below: “Mary Smitton Aunt Polly daughter of Mary Ziegler married her cousin John son of Aunt Catherine”.

Notes to me/about the scanning of this album: So LightRoom sorted all the photos into name order which was a bit frustrating as I would have liked them to be in the order that they are in the album. I have another copy of my photos in a separate folder, that are by time order, therefore in the order that they appear in the album. This is kind of mind-numbing detail, and if you’re reading this you may wonder “Why am I reading this?!?” – but by the images not being in the order that they appear in the album a few micro stories, vignettes are missed – eg pairs of photos, of young couples, presumably shot on an important occasion – a marriage or engagement even perhaps… but now separated by their first name in this computer-generated alphabetical listing. One last point! The few photos above that wouldn’t import to the PowerPoint file wouldn’t do so, I think, because their file names were too long: I’d labelled each file with the caption that Puss had written.

This album was photographed using an SLR camera on a tripod with lighting.
